YMMV / Tom King

Go To

  • Broken Base: Perhaps the most controversial aspect of his bibliography (aside from his infamous proclivities towards heroes dealing with trauma) is his loose approach to canon, with a tendency to tell stories about certain superheroes with a fairly lax grip on whatever personality and mythos they were tied with by writers before him. This has earned King much acclaim, such as with The Vision and Mister Miracle (which were praised for using deconstruction to advance the characters in new contexts and develop them beyond their usual story types), but it's also caused much controversy, such as with his take on Batman and many characters in Heroes in Crisis, most infamously Wally West (which were criticized for being too out-of-character and/or unfaithful towards long-established canon). Virtually any time he's announced to be attached to a familiar character, you'll find just as many people cheering in anticipation as others wincing in fear for what dark deconstruction he's going to pull with them.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Tom King's proclivity for injecting mental-health issues, word-repetition, and depressed male heroes hasn't gone unnoticed by DC fans. Especially after his controversial run on Batman and the even-more-controversial Heroes in Crisis, his style is often used as snark-bait amongst vocal critics of his more recent works, who wish he would altogether stop using the medium of comic-books as his own personal therapy-sessions.
