• Nightmare Fuel:
  • During Fugui's stint as a soldier for the Kuomintang army, he talks about how there were so many wounded men that they were simply piled among the dead without any medical treatment at all, and that their moaning and screaming in pain is something that he can never forget. Truth in Television, as the KMT was so badly supplied during the civil war that they were unable to get basic medical necessities by the war's final years.
  • Youjing is killed when a party member's jeep crashes into a brick wall, and the bricks fall on him while the boy is sleeping. In the film, while he was Killed Offscreen, his dead body was actually shown, albeit covered by a blanket.
  • Fengxia's death from childbirth. The movie version even shows her losing a large amount of blood and the nurses panicking as they try to help her.
• Tear Jerker: From the film. "Mommy's here. Mommy's here..."
• The Woobie: Hell, just about everybody in the book. It's hard not to get screwed over when you're a peasant in Red China.
