YMMV / Thriller (2018)

• Spiritual Successor: Of Prom Night (1980), which is very obvious to anyone familiar with that film. This movie is actually much, much closer to it than its own remake:
  • The setup is virtually identical. Both films begin with a group of children chasing another around an abandoned building in an attempt to scare them. In both films, one of the children falls to their death.
  • Both films then skip ahead to the surviving children's senior year of high school, right as a dance (the senior prom in Prom Night and the homecoming dance in this film) is about to get underway. In both films, the teenagers are still struggling with the event from years earlier, although much more so in this film.
  • In both films, one of the girls doesn't get a date until shortly before the dance (Jude with Slick in Prom Night and Kim with Unique in this film), and in both cases, lose their virginities that night in the back of their date's van. In both cases, the girls end up murdered in said van.
  • Both films feature a twin of the dead child playing a prominent role in the plot (Alex in Prom Night and Kim in this film).
  • Both films have fist fights in the school cafeteria (Alex vs. Lou in Prom Night and Ty vs. Andre in this film). In both films, one of the pair is reprimanded by the school principal, and later teams up with a girl (Lou with Wendy in Prom Night, Andre with Gina in this film) to sabotage the dance.
  • Both films have a couple breaking up at the dance (Kelly and Drew in Prom Night and Tiffany and Eddie in this film). In both cases, one half of the couple is immediately killed after said break up.
  • Both films feature extended chase scenes throughout the school during the dance (with Wendy in Prom Night and Lisa in this film). In both films, the girl ends up under a desk in a classroom, with the killer lurking around them.
  • In both films, the killer is one of the kids present during the opening scene murder ( Alex in Prom Night, Derrick in this film), and not revealed until the end.
