YMMV / The Wizard of Oz (1925)

• Designated Hero: Prince Kynd is supposed to be Reasonable Authority Figure who opposes Kruel. However, despite outranking Kruel and Kruel's horrible actions, he never just fires Kruel and assume control of Oz himself and lets Kruel and his minions do horrible things. In addition, when the farmhands are sent to the dungeon to be eaten by lions, he does nothing about it. For most of the movie, he just complains about Kruel without taking any actual action. The one time he actually tries to fight Kruel, he needs to be saved by the Scarecrow. As such, Kynd comes off as lazy and incompetent and not particularly heroic or kind. This makes it all the worst that he is the one who Dorothy marries instead of the Scarecrow.
• Unexpected Character: The main villain and Dorothy's love interest are obscure characters from the ninth book, The Scarecrow of Oz.
• Values Dissonance:
  • One of the main characters is Snowball, a black farmhand who's first shown eating watermelon in the field.
  • You would assume Snowball's actor Spencer Bell being credited under the racist Stage Name "G. Howe Black" would fall under this. However, even at the time, this received criticism. A review at Variety admonished the director crediting Bell as "G. Howe Black".
