YMMV / The Winter King

Go To

  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some tuned in just to watch Iain De Caestecker (best known for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) who plays Arthur.
  • Older Than They Think: Arthur and Mordred have also been portrayed as half-siblings in Prince Valiant.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The trailers left the books' fandom mostly unenthusiastic, as the show visuals leaning more towards generic modern medieval fantasy than the gritty post-Roman historical setting of the books seemed to miss the point of them being a Demythification take on the King Arthur story. The trailers also focused on Arthur and not the real book protagonist Derfel. The tagline "Before Britain, there was Arthur" irked people who pointed out "Britain" should have been "England". Even Arthur's haircut was unfavorably likened to the Arthur in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, a recent retelling that itself got an unenthusiastic response. When the show came out, online engagement and discussion was pretty middling and any social media presence was completely overshadowed by Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake due to having a character also called the Winter King. Though the release schedule didn't help as it was only viewable in the US for several months.
  • Questionable Casting: The Colorblind Casting leading to Race Lifts for named characters and extras alike gets this response from those readers that feel this undermines the whole "historically grounded Dark Ages Britain retelling" premise of the books, with black Merlin being singled out ever since the first trailer dropped. Then the actor also happens to be quite a bit younger than Merlin is in the books, and ultimately his Merlin is much more of a generic sage compared to the lecherous Magnificent Bastard Cloud Cuckoolander in the books. Sagramor, who was supposed to be black in the books and remains so here, is no longer unique and feared because of it which coupled with his badassery made him an Ensemble Dark Horse, and is now just one of the guys.
