YMMV / The Way We Were

  • Values Dissonance: In one scene, before they are even a couple or have started dating, Hubbell gets extremely drunk and blacks out. Katie puts him into bed, climbs in naked next to him, and gets him revived enough to start kissing and fondling her. Eventually, he passes back out and Katie reassures his unconscious self it was alright because he "didn't know who it was" i.e. she knows he wouldn't have been interested in her had he been sober and only kissed her because he thought she was a different, more attractive girl. While at the time this was considered (and still can be to some extent) a tender, sweet scene as Katie has yearned for Hubbell for some time now and almost cries from happiness at being kissed by him despite the state he's in, this scene doesn't translate well today. It involves a man stinking of beer, who just threw up, and is the middle of an alcoholic blackout so bad he can't even form words or fully rouse himself to consciousness sexually fondling a woman when he doesn't know who she is. She knows all this and deliberately encourages this behavior despite the fact at least one or both of them is close to committing rape.
