YMMV / The Water-Babies

  • Values Dissonance: Even by Victorian standards the book is startlingly racist, mainly against Irish people. There's a lengthy passage depicting an imaginary conversation with an Irishman, portrayed as a moronic compulsive liar, which ends with "…and wonder all the while why poor ould Ireland does not prosper like England and Scotland, and some other places, where folks have taken up a ridiculous fancy that honesty is the best policy". Other passages make jabs about potato-eating gorillas.
  • Values Resonance: The book argues against child labour and corporal punishment during a time when both were commonplace.
