YMMV / The Veldt

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: When you are a parent, sometimes you have to put your foot down and establish that "No means no!" Lydia is the one who alerts George to the playroom being weird and says that the house has taken away housewife duties from her, but she caves first when the kids beg to play one last time. George even lampshades this, pointing out that they're spoiling Peter and Wendy rotten but gives in after hearing their tantrums for a few hours. This ends up literally killing George and Lydia.
  • Fridge Horror: This applies whether or not Dr. McClean was able to escort the kids out of the nursery, and if he is able to logically put together what they did. If not, then he's lion chow and lured into a false sense of security. And if he gets out alive, he'll be forced to report the kids to the cops and involuntarily commit them for attempted murder.
  • Values Dissonance: The story assumes 1950s cultural mores and projects them into the future. Lydia is a housewife with no housework to do because the Smart House does all her work for her. It never occurs to the couple that she could get a job or find some other way to occupy the time.
  • Values Resonance: On the other hand, its themes about the psychological effects of technology on family relations have gotten more and more relevant as children become more integrated into technology.
