YMMV / The Unstoppable Wasp

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: In issue #1 of Unstoppable Wasp, Nadia seems pretty happy while discussing the fact her mother died days after her birth, her treatment in the Red Room's Science Class and the fact that, after escaping to find her father, she learned that Hank Pym has apparently died. When the immigration officer she's talking to comments on how happy Nadia seems despite this she explains that if she spent her life being bitter then it would be like she never escaped.
  • Broken Base:
    • Nadia being another product of the continued trend of Legacy Characters at Marvel saw her get the brunt of this from the get-go. It is is either a perfectly fine comic that was lost in the over-saturation of the 2010's Marvel policies, or the pinnacle of everything wrong with Marvel in 2010's. There is no in-between.
    • It's not uncommon to see people disagreeing on if the treatment of Janet Van Dyne is OK. For some, the book is perfectly OK and does a good job representing the original Wasp in her role as a mentor to Nadia, while for others, it's a slap in the face that Nadia got an ongoing dedicated to her in spite of only a handful of appearances and little fandom support, despite Janet never getting an ongoing even though she's a long-running and well-liked character. A third group, however, think that the book does a good job with Janet's role, but believe it's unfortunate Janet didn't get a bigger role, or her own book to lead.
  • Crack Ship: Despite having not met yet, Nadia's interactions with Scott Lang has caused people to start shipping her with Cassie Lang, a hero with similar powers whose around the same age as Nadia and happens to be Scott's daughter. Part of the reason is that Scott and Nadia quickly developed a Father/Daughter like relationship. They end up meeting in Issue 7 of the relaunch and instantly hit it off.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Pretty much all of Nadia and Janet's interactions, though the crowner for Vol. 1 has to be Nadia taking Janet's name, Van Dyne, as her family name because while she is biologically a Pym she never really knew her father and Janet was the one who gave her a family she always wanted.
    • In Vol. 2 Nadia's birthday party is just full of this. With the help of Viv Vision she is introduced to several people who could be considered family, even if their relation is more than a little complicated (Wiccan and Speed's relation even forces Viv into a BSOD). Nadia accepts every one of them with giddy joy.
    • In the same issue, her reaction when villains attack the nightclub they're partying in, and Nadia realizes that Cassie brought them here specifically because of that is both this and laugh out loud funny:
Nadia: You got me a team-up!
      Cassie: *winking* I got you a team-up.
Nadia: We are best friends now!
    • There's also Nadia meeting her half-brother (by way of Hank's Skrull impostor) William and his mother Tigra, and accepting both.
    • The final issue of Vol. 2 at the end, with Nadia finally figuring out that she doesn't need to do everything and save everyone, Ying finally finding out her last name and where she was born along with Shay's father accepting Ying, Pryia becoming her own super hero and Taina getting a boyfriend, some guy with the name "Reyes" who loves cars as she does.
  • My Real Daddy: Jeremy Whitley's work on Nadia's solo titles has been much better received by the fanbase than Mark Waid's introduction of the character over in the Avengers book.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Nadia discovers that if she doesn't return then Mother will detonate the bomb in Ying's brain, killing her. After attempting to find a way to remove it and apparently getting nowhere, she urges the other members of G.I.R.L. to keep inventing and being brilliant before leaving to sacrifice her freedom for Ying's life, on the basis that she sees it as a small trade for her best (and first) friend's life.
    • In the final issue Nadia sees her parents on a video, seeing her mother for the first time ever.
    • Issues 4 and 5 of the second volume, effectively Nadia's "Hank slapping Janet" moment. Lost in a Manic episode, Nadia is majorly sleep-deprived and effectively kicks G.I.R.L.'s collective asses when they decide snatching her lab was the best way to keep her from running away. After she gets back her lab, everyone save Priya leaves to look after themselves. Priya chases Nadia into the lab and is forced to save her from throwing herself off her lab rooftop as Nadia's bipolar disorder swings her from Manic to Depressive. When the two return to the normal-sized world, Nadia throws herself at Janet, tearfully admitting she's broken and she needs help.
