• Evil Is Cool: Megatron and Sentinel Prime are both supremely badass warriors pursuing their goals in less than noble ways.
• Harsher in Hindsight:
  • In-universe. The crowds at the gladiatorial games are populated with various cameos of famous and obscure TF characters, one of which is Overlord. Only a few years later, Overlord would go on to become the antagonist of Last Stand of the Wreckers where he forced Autobots and Decepticons to engage in gladiatorial combat at a prison complex he had taken over.
  • Sentinel Prime is a Hero Antagonist whose brutal tactics (nailing Megatron's forces in a wide-ranging police operation and forcibly taking the Apex Armor) were justified by Megatron's far greater ferocity. Years later, James Roberts's stories depict Sentinel Prime as a brutal thug for the Senate who orchestrated many murders such as Nominus.
• Memetic Mutation: Megatron's depiction here, and IDW in general, is often playfully compared to that of Walter White.
• The Woobie: The unnamed Energon miner grunt whose brutal death kicked off the riot where Megs took his first life. Poor guy just wanted him and his fellow workers to be treated fairly, rightfully calling out the Senate on their callousness.
