YMMV / The Tinder Box

Go To

  • Designated Hero: Our protagonist murders a witch (who, in most versions, is not shown doing anything particularly witchy besides being old and ugly) for not telling him how her tinder box works, secretly courts (and in some versions of the story, abducts and mistreats) a princess, and certainly doesn't seem too bothered when his dogs tear apart an entire courtroom, including the king and queen. Why is he the hero, again?
  • Magnificent Bastard: The soldier seizes the titular tinderbox and uses the magic dogs it can summon to make himself rich by having them bring him gold. A crafty man who can always think on his feet, the soldier desires to wed the princess and courts her in secret. When captured by the royal family for his attempts at wooing her, the soldier tricks a young man into bringing him the tinderbox and uses a request for a last smoke to summon the dogs and kill his enemies. As generous as he can be manipulative, the solider also gives freely to the poor, knowing what it's like to live in their shoes, and marries the princess to start a very prosperous and happy reign.
