YMMV / The Symbol of the Unconquered

  • Anvilicious: Oscar Michaeux's race films are not known to be subtle, with The Symbol of the Unconcerned being no exception. From the start it's very heavy-handed with its themes on race and racism.
  • Narm: The flashback with Jefferson and his mother is supposed to be dramatic and tense, but it's more funny than anything. His mother is so happy to see her son while she's oblivious to his girlfriend having a fit right next to her. The girlfriend's melodramatic reaction is the especially narmy part. After she runs away, Jefferson gets so mad that he strangles his mother, throws her to the floor, and screams skyward in rage.
