YMMV / The Sisters Brothers

Go To

  • Adorkable: Eli has his moments, such as when he's using a toothbrush for the first time or his excitement at the toilet in the hotel he and Charlie were staying at.
  • Award Snub: Despite critical acclaim, it failed to receive any Oscar or Golden Globe nominations, and only managed a few critic's awards. Not helping was the fact that that year's Oscar nominees were considered unusually weak, with the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice (2018) and Green Book getting nominations and wins (with the last-named film taking home the Best Picture trophy, and the first-named film winning almost everything it was up for) despite mixed reviews, almost purely for their palatable subject matter.
  • Funny Moments: Charlie telling the townsfolk of Mayfield that they can finally change the name of their town not long after murdering Mayfield.
    • And before that, Eli trying to break the news to the townsfolk about Mayfield's death.
    • The brothers showing up to the Commodore's place to kill him only to find out he's dead and they're at his funeral. Even funnier, they were the only people that actually attended.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Rutger Hauer playing a dead guy became this when he died for real the year after the movie released.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix playing brothers; the latter had starred in Walk the Line, while the former starred in the parody film Walk Hard, which owes a lot to Walk The Line.
  • Ho Yay: Morris' plans about handing Warm over are easily dissolved when the two form a friendship. During the movie, Warm exchanges eye contact longingly with Morris and even, the pair die at the same time. Jake Gyllenhaal's probably most famous roles as homosexual characters does help.
  • Tear Jerker: Warm's last words to Eli about Morris.
"Oh, John. I feel I've known you a long time... I'm sorry you died before me."
    • Eli finding his horse, Tubs, dead in a hitch.
  • The Woobie: Eli. While still a competent bounty hunter, he's still this sweet person who has to be a Cloudcuckoolander's Minder to his deranged brother, who killed their dad in self-defense. Also his horse dies of a cut that gets infected (this moment in particular hits him pretty hard if the scene immediately following is of any indication), and he has to cut off said brother's hand after an incident involving the gold-finding chemical. After everything he goes through, you just can't help but want to give him a hug and tell him that everything will be okay. It helps that John C. Reilly himself is pretty huggable.
