YMMV / The Simpsons S7 E3 "Home Sweet Homediddly-Dum-Doodily"

Go To

  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: When Homer takes Ned's baptism water to save his kids, a burning sound is heard and Homer snarls in pain. This could just be a case of Holy Burns Evil but Homer being a religious man himself and terrified of the kids being baptized by Ned because as he put it "in the eyes of God they will be Flandereses!", the pain from the baptism might have been Homer's reaction to becoming a Flanders in the spiritual sense, a family he openly dislikes.
  • Franchise Original Sin: In hindsight, this was probably the episode that cemented Ned Flanders's characterization as a conservative Christian and made Ned the Trope Namer for Flanderization. Prior to this episode, the show took a tongue-in-cheek attitude about Ned's beliefs, and his wife Maude had been the lone Flanders that had been portrayed as anything like a Moral Guardian. Starting with this episode, both Flanderses would show the same sort of moralizing, demonstrated by them trying to baptize the Simpson children without Homer and Marge's consent.
  • Fridge Horror: Unless something happened in the interim, nobody was around to hear Maggie's first word, as far as Bart and Lisa know, it was "daddily-doodily".
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Although Maggie starts to go native at the Flanders' house due to, in Lisa's words, not having been a Simpson as long as the others have, Lisa and Bart dislike being there and wholeheartedly miss Homer as well as Marge. In The Simpsons Movie, Bart starts to embrace Ned as a Parental Substitute due to Homer's lousy fathering and winds up outright stating that he wishes Ned was his father instead of Homer.
