YMMV / The Simpsons S6 E25 "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part One)"

Go To

  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: When Burns acts Totally Radical to talk to Skinner, he's seen wearing Jimbo's clothes. It's left ambiguous whether he just happened to buy the same pair of clothes, saw Jimbo and decided to impersonate him, or mugged Jimbo for his clothes off-screen.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • There was a theory that the one who shot Mr. Burns was Super Dude, the dead grade four gerbil that indirectly leads to the school striking oil.
    • TheRealJims offered two alternate theories that either Marge or Lisa shot Mr. Burns. He would later release three other theories where Grandpa, Bart, and Homer are possible shooters.
    • In 2020, someone noticed that Krusty at the end of part one really looked like Homer dressed as Krusty, as in "Homie the Clown", giving rise to the theory Homer had disguised himself as Krusty to shoot Mr. Burns. Showrunner Bill Oakley shot this down and said this wasn't intentional. TheRealJims also mentioned this in his theory that Homer shot Mr. Burns.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Skinner and Chalmers's exchange near the start of the episode, when Skinner hides the word "Awful" at the start of the headline about Springfield Elementary finding oil ("Awful School is Awful Rich") and then covers it up with Blatant Lies, is often seen by fans as a percursor to the famous "Steamed Hams" scene from "22 Short Films About Springfield".
Chalmers: Now, what's that say under your hand there?
Skinner: Hmm? Oh, it's an unrelated article.
    Chalmers: It's an unrelated article?
    Skinner: Mm-hmm.
    Chalmers: Within the banner headline?
    Skinner: Yes.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The episode's Take That! towards Comedy Central dates it to the the mid-90s when the network was considered a dumping ground for old reruns and poor original programming. It wasn't until South Park premiered in 1997 that its reputation improved.
    • Obviously the episode is dated to before 2000 when Tito Puente died.
  • Values Dissonance: Today, there's a form of security when it comes to weapons, especially in a government building like Town Hall. However, Mayor Quimby didn’t seem to be too bothered about this and let the people express their reasons for being armed.
