- Alternative Character Interpretation: This episode raises the possibility that Sideshow Bob's chronic case of Why Don't You Just Shoot Him? with regard to Bart is due to not actually wanting to kill him at all. The other option (and the one Bob indicates in his song) is that he really did try on the previous occasions but has failed enough times to have grown attached to Bart in the process.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- The episode makes fun of That '80s Show with a Show Within a Show That '30s Show. This is before The Simpsons came out with the episode "That 90s Show".
- Sideshow Bob is offered his pick of roles in Man of La Mancha. In 2019, Kelsey Grammer played the title role.
- At the climax, Bob sings about how he's gotten attached to his attempts to kill Bart to the tune of "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" from My Fair Lady. When the show did a full-on parody of the musical later on during Season 17, that would not be one of the numbers adapted.
