YMMV / The Rules of Attraction

  • Anvilicious: The message, along with the other stories by Bret Easton Ellis, is that these so-called "Cool" and "Successful" rich people are shallow, sociopathic and empty people who waste their lives abusing drugs, alcohol, and not caring about others and that we should be nothing like them. The story isn't even remotely subtle about it.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: After Lauren passes out and awakens to find herself being raped by a "townie", the latter vomits all over her as he finishes. Mercifully, the film begins to rewind time just as he throws up on her, sparing the audience a disgusting sight.
  • Memetic Mutation: I need you like I need an asshole on my elbow became a well known line and used for memes. When threatened by a drug dealer, Sean tries to talk himself out of it by saying the drug dealer needs him, to which the drug dealer says:
I need you, like I need a motherfucking asshole on my elbow. [Points his elbow towards Sean's face] Right here: an asshole. [Beat] That's how much I need you!
  • Retroactive Recognition: Neither Jessica Biel nor Kate Bosworth were stars at the time the film came out.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: In a story where all the characters are shallow and unsympathetic rich kids who do nothing but engage in drug abuse and other debauched deeds simply out of boredom, you will not find yourself sympathizing or rooting for anyone.
