• Jerkass Woobie: Clara. She's very prickly and often spiteful, particularly towards Denise, but especially in season 1 seems to be a deeply angry and unhappy person. Outside of her unrequited feelings for Moray and jealousy of Denise, in episode 3 of season 1 it's revealed that she has an illegitimate daughter whom she gave to a foundlings' home while paying to be sure she wasn't adopted by someone else. Over the course of the episode, she comes to realize that her circumstances may never change, and in the meantime she's only kept her daughter from finding a loving home. Being forced to choose between hanging on to the possibility of someday being with her child and allowing her a better chance at happiness, she ultimately picks the latter and stops sending payments to the foundlings' home, but the decision makes her so miserable that she even accepts comfort from Denise, a person she despises.
• Values Dissonance: The show's completely uncritical glorification of capitalism and consumerism and positive framing of Denise all but completely erasing any semblance of a boundary between her personal life and her job may strike some viewers as naïve at best and propagandistic at worst.
