YMMV / The Owl House S2E8 "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door"

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Many fans had comparatively dismissive attitudes that there would be any particularly significant development compared to that of previous episodes in the season, as the synopsis listed Hooty as being a major part of the episode. Come the episode's release, however, the fandom has lauded it as one of the season's best episodes, and by some reviewers as one of the best episodes in ANY cartoon, between revealing King's powers, revealing the Owl Beast's backstory, giving Eda a new form, once again showing King's maybe father, and last but not least, making the Lumity ship canon.
  • Awesome Art:
    • Eda's owl-witch form is simply amazing to behold. In universe, Eda thought the same.
    • Before Amity and Luz could be flattened by the falling debris of the house, King's soundwave creates a series of shiny, bright bubbles. Really, everything from the Tunnel of Love to the heart-shaped crater Hooty unwittingly made is sugary sweet.
    • Eda's dream morphs from being black and gloomy to glowing brightly and eye-popping. Eda even mentions that this was the first time she had ever had a dream that beautiful.
  • Fanfic Fuel: If Eda can use the Owl Beast to become a harpy woman, then could Lilith one day do the same? As of the the epilogue, Harpy Lilith is officially canon.
  • Fanon: It's been joked about on different media platforms that Edric and Emira were aware that Amity was abducted by Hooty but chose to do nothing because (in many versions at least) Hooty revealed that he was trying to hook her up with Luz.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Ever since a certain thumbnail was revealed on Showcase, fans have jokingly referred to the Owl Beast as fried chicken due to the color scheme present.
    • It's probably just going to be filler.note
    • Hooty’s smug face as he starts to plot some schemes to help Luz, Eda and King.
    • Bruce Banner’s statement regarding how he reconciled with Hulk from Avengers: Endgame was often used describing how Eda made peace with the Owl Beast.
    • "DON'T YOU TALK ABOUT MY MOTHER!"
    • "Let's dress up and travel together!" Explanation
  • Signature Scene:
    • Aside from the hilariousness involved with it, Luz and Amity asking each other out. After already making it clear that the characters would not be going the Will They or Won't They? route until the season finale or last episode of the series, the moment will go down in animation history especially in regards to it being a same-sex couple.
    • When Eda comes to terms with the Owl Beast, her nightmare becomes a beautiful dream and she acquires a new form.
    • And of course, "DON'T YOU TALK ABOUT MY MOTHER!"
  • Unexpected Character:
    • No one expected Amity to come back into Luz's life so soon. She wasn't even mentioned in the press release, which made her appearance even more of a surprise.
    • Nor did anyone expect the demon who bears an uncanny resemblance to King to show up immediately one episode after his debut. And voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson no less!
  • The Woobie:
    • The Owl Beast, at first painted as a mindless, violent creature, is revealed to be as much of a victim of the curse as Eda was. It was forcibly captured and sealed by a mysterious being known as the Collector, and had tried to escape to freedom ever since. From there, all of its actions are put into a new perspective such as it attacking Eda's father: the bright lights and noise from the fireworks triggered a traumatic panic attack from the poor beast.
    • Hooty is shown in this episode to have some hidden insecurities about his place amongst the other residents of the Owl House and, after reading Lilith's letter, decides to help his friends out in his own clumsy way. However each time he tries to help he thinks he's made things worse, unaware that his methods actually did help his friends in some way, culminating in him believing that he has ruined Luz's chance of dating Amity. Afterwards Hooty is so distraught he violently tries to break out of the Owl House believing that he is a curse on his friends. Fortunately by episode's end things work out and Hooty ends up feeling much better about himself.
