YMMV / The Magic Book of Spells

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Despite being a fairly passive character in the book, Seth became rather popular among fans, who anticipated him as an Evil Overlord potentially even more dangerous and cunning than Toffee. It's not uncommon to find people who were disappointed that the final season never even mentioned him (let alone Word of God declaring he's dead anyway at the AMA), and would have preferred him as the series' final villain over Mina Loveberry.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Eclipsa's chapter in the book is forbidden, supposedly because of its dark magic. However, Star mentions that the spells are no big deal. Of course, they're no big deal — the chapter isn't forbidden because of the magic, but because anyone who read it would discover that Eclipsa and Shastacan never had children, which means that Festivia wasn't Eclipsa's daughter.
    • It may also be forbidden because Eclipsa has pages on tips for dating monsters, which, in Mewni, would be seen as being taboo.
  • Salvaged Story: For some who felt the racial conflict between the Mewmans and monsters had gotten too Anvilicious for its own good feel this way about the more in-depth look at the Cycle of Revenge, showing the situation is far more morally grey than it originally seemed in the show.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Despite him being mentioned in the Book of Spells, Toffee is only briefly mentioned within the books in both Comet and Moon's chapters while nothing about his potential backstory is heard. Though this case it may be justified as the book is more about the queens' point of view in each chapter.
  • The Woobie:
    • Dirhhennia the Heaped was seemingly born with a mental disorder that made her obsessed with balls, alongside chronic depression. Most of the people in her life, including her mother Festivia and her younger sister Crescenta, never really did anything to help her or try to understand her with the exception of her boyfriend Chad. Dirhhennia was later forced to abdicate the throne to Crescenta, who once turned her into a literal lone wolf because she got sick of Dirhhennia calling herself that.
    • Rhina the Riddled was completely asexual, and had to cast a love spell on herself so she would be open to the idea of marrying someone. Unfortunately, her husband John Roachley turned out to be abusive and cruel. Rhina ended up becoming a Sympathetic Murderer when an attempt to use a heartbreak spell went too far, making her husband die of literal heartbreak. Not only did that mess her up, it messed up her daughter as well when she was born.
    • Celena the Shy was born from a loveless, abusive marriage between the previous queen and her demon husband, and her mother's crime of accidental spousal murder caused her to grow up extremely shy. But because she was so beautiful, everyone in her court wanted to get close enough for her to spill, causing her to become reclusive as well.
