YMMV / The Lower Depths (1957)

• Crosses the Line Twice: When Tonosama bursts in announcing in the middle of a fun song and dance number that the actor has killed himself, it's a horrifying moment. The announcement itself isn't funny. The reactions of the residents of the tenement are funny. Then Yoshisaburo's callous mark crosses the line again:
  Yoshisaburo: It was such a great party, and he had to go and ruin it. Bastard!

• Designated Hero: Sutekichi. He's not a bad guy by nature, but he does whore around with his lover's sister.
• Most Wonderful Sound: Kouji Mitsui's (Yoshisaburo) distinctive nasal voice, which is strange and yet hypnotic.
• The Woobie: Asa. A sweet, mild mannered old lady suffering from Incurable Cough of Death.
