YMMV / The Legend of Lylah Clare

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: It was based on an episode of the NBC Genre Anthology drama The DuPont Show of the Week from 1963, with Tuesday Weld and Broadway star Alfred Drake. There, Lylah was much more obviously based on Marilyn Monroe.
  • Narm: One of those movies that's kinda dull when it's trying to be funny, but hilarious when it tries to be serious. Particularly, we're supposed to be horrified when Elsa goes Full Lylah, but it's easily the funniest part of the film.
  • Narm Charm: At a poorly-paced 2 hours and 10 minutes, it can be a chore to watch. But between the horribly overwritten script and the knowingly hammy performances, it manages to be entertaining.
  • Older Than They Think: Predating Seinfeld's Sue Ellen Mischke by several decades, Kim Novak wore a bra as a top in one scene of this film (albeit with a scarf instead of with a blazer).
  • So Bad, It's Good: A regular on "worst movies of all-time" lists. Has the distinction of being featured in the books Bad Movies We Love and The Official Razzie Movie Guide. It's often likened to The Oscar, with its Horrible Hollywood cliches and overripe dialogue (poor Ernest Borgnine was in both movies).
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The film's main problem. The only real likable character is Mousy!Elsa, and when she starts turning into Lylah, it just becomes a cynical Horrible Hollywood tale with little hope for redemption.
