YMMV / The Italian Job (2003)

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Much of the soundtrack.
    • Stella drives to her office to Boomkat's "The Wreckoning".
    • Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker" plays during Handsome Rob's introduction.
    • The test of the Mini Coopers is set to Kazzer's "Pedal To The Metal".
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Sure, it might be necessary for the crew to make a Deal with the Devil with the ruthless Ukrainian gangster Mashkov to defeat Steve, but giving him a large amount of gold bars can't end well in the long run, especially considering that Mashkov is quite fond of murder and torture.
  • Funny Moments: Admittedly the Flashback Cuts to each of the crew's backstories.
    • The unfortunately deleted set of scenes in which Left Ear has to take over driving one of the Minis, and struggles with the stick shift.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The film was meant to have a sequel called The Brazilian Job, but it was ultimately canceled and the script was re-worked into the fifth movie in The Fast and the Furious franchise, Fast Five. Then the director of the Italian Job remake directed the eighth film, The Fate of the Furious, which likewise stars Statham and Theron. Even funnier come Hobbs and Shaw which features a scene in which Shaw showcasing his vehicles mentions he used a Mini Cooper for a job in Italy.
  • Love to Hate: Edward Norton is sublime at playing a smug, obnoxious, self-obsessed asshole of a villain. It's the rare example of a movie where the fact that an actor clearly does not want to be there actually ends up working to the movie's advantage.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Charlie Croker is a master thief in the heist team of career thief John Bridger and has "been a thief since [he's] had baby teeth". He plans the titular job in Venice perfectly, with each member of the team's skills utilized to successfully steal gold bricks valued at $35 million. When Steve Frazelli betrays and murders John, nearly kills the rest of the team and steals all the gold for himself, Charlie hatches a scheme to steal the gold back and avenge John. Charlie once again orchestrates another heist in LA while getting John's daughter Stella to step in as safe cracker and gasses the guards Steve hired to protect the safe. After a miraculous escape through the city streets, Charlie reveals he made a deal with Ukrainian mobster Mashkov to dispose of Steve once and for all.
  • Memetic Mutation: Skinny Pete's "If there's one thing that I know, it's never to mess with Mother Nature, mother-in-laws, or mother-freaking-Ukranians" became this instantly the moment the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine started up in real life. Especially in the following weeks when it became clear that the Ukranians were actually succeeding in holding back the Russian advance.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Oscar Nunez of The Office plays a guard.
    • Pete from 30 Rock is the wannabe actor who Rob is stuck behind in traffic.
    • Beaupre from Home Alone 3 is the head of the Ukrainian gangsters.
