YMMV / The Gnomes of Dulwich

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Part of the reason the series failed was because it was considered by audiences to be both too childish but also too smutty.
  • Padding: "Human Beans Have Parties" (which focuses on the gnomes throwing a party) has a lengthy sequence in the middle about the gnomes playing hide and seek that adds nothing to the plot.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • A gnome in "Human Beans Have Parties" was played by Jack Haig, who would later be best known for playing the first LeClerc in 'Allo 'Allo!.
    • A gnome in the final episode was played by Nigel Hawthorne, who would later be best known for playing Sir Humphrey Appleby in Yes, Minister.
    • A society photographer in the final episode was played by Frank Williams, who would later be best known for playing The Vicar in Dad's Army.
  • Special Effect Failure: The "giant" human effects were dodgy even by 1969's standards, as there were numerous imperfections visible onscreen.
  • Values Dissonance: Big looks down on the Empire Gnomes, dismissing them as "plastic Chinese twits", while none of the Empire Gnomes were actually played by Chinese actors, but mostly white actors using broad, offensive accents.
