- Paranoia Fuel:
- The fact that Hollows exist in general in the FMA world for starters. There have been "sites" and "locations" where people are rumored to mysteriously disappear, more than likely because of a Hollow attack. Citizens are left in a disarray of mixed feelings of unease and anxiety about this. Some are properly afraid and apprehensive and wouldn't dare to step one foot in "haunted places" like that. The more brave and daring and/or skeptical, however, often sometimes go to investigate these "mysterious site disappearances" (sometimes out of curiosity or on a dare), and you guess how well that goes.
- Military men and police officers are sent to explore and inspect these rumored sites, and uncover the truth, unknowingly being sent to their deaths with almost nothing to show for it. Even Mustang sends Edward out on one, which leads to all of them (him, Al, Orihime, and Nina) being entrapped by Mind Rape illusions and and nearly killed, if not for the timely intervention of Eria. It has gotten so bad that Orihime repeatedly warns Edward and Alphonse to stay away from these "haunted sites" for fear of their safety. This is all because of the fact that Soul Reapers aren't around to do their usual memory wipe thingy, and to subdue the Hollow threats.
