• Americans Hate Tingle: The film utterly bombed in China, grossing little more than $500k in the country. Speculated reasons range from the film neither being too American or too Chinese, the somewhat stereotypical family dynamics and Awkwafina not conforming to strict Chinese beauty standards.
• Award Snub: The film didn't receive any Oscar nominations. Many people had expected Awkwafina to get a Best Actress nomination, Zhao Shuzhen to get a Best Supporting Actress nomination, and Lulu Wang to get a Best Original Screenplay nomination.
• He Really Can Act: Awkwafina, largely known as a viral rap artist and a comedic actress, delivers a heartfelt performance as Billi. She'd then go on to receive the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, becoming the first Asian-American actress to win in that category.
