- Alternate Character Interpretation: Quite a lot surrounding Francisca, including:
- Is she a sociopath who can't understand right and wrong, or is she in fact a deeply emotional person whose horrific childhood has given her Blue-and-Orange Morality?
- Is she actually bisexual, experimenting, or simply Love Hungry when she meets Kimiko? Considering that she's spent her whole life on the farm, it seems like it can go either way.
- Did she intend to kill Kimiko from the outset, or was she genuinely trying to form a relationship with her and only resorted to violence when she felt like she had to?
- Broken Base: Generally, reactions are divided between those who consider it a disturbing masterpiece and those who find it boring and contemptible.
- Moral Event Horizon: If she didn't already cross it by killing Kimiko, Francisca leaps over it when she kidnaps Antonio and turns Lucy into her blind, mute pet.
- Nightmare Fuel: Oh so very much, especially in the last 20 minutes. Generally speaking, every single scene involving Lucy is bound to give you nightmares.
- Squick: Francisca's bizarre "friendship" with Charlie is bad enough, but it gets worse when she kills Kimiko. Apparently frustrated by her failure to form a relationship with Kimiko, she proceeds to take Charlie out of the barn and rape him in her parents' room.
- Tear Jerker: Lucy's reaction to having her son taken away. The actress's performance is gut-wrenchingly real.
- The Woobie: It's pretty much impossible to not feel sympathy for Lucy after her baby is stolen from right out of her arms and she is mutilated and turned into a pet by the woman that did it.
