YMMV / The Dick Cavett Show

Go To

  • Fandom Rivalry: Due to how incredibly different it is from the late-night talk shows of today, many of the comments below the show's official Youtube channel often speak negatively of the current landscape. Due to how comparatively obscure the show is, this example is a bit one-sided as there aren't a lot of fans of Kimmel, Meyers, Fallon, et. al. who return the negativity.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In 1971, while Cavett was still doing his show for ABC, George Harrison was a guest and he and Cavett briefly talked about the differences between American and British TV. Harrison touted Monty Python's Flying Circus as a British show that an American network ought to pick up. While it would become a PBS staple a few years later, ABC would also air The Monty Python Show—two heavily edited and censored specials culled from the final season of Flying Circus—in 1975 as part of the Wide World of Entertainment block that had been ABC's replacement for Cavett on their late night schedule. The Pythons hated the ABC shows so much they sued the network over them.
  • Never Live It Down: Dick Cavett will always be known for Jerome Rodale dying during a taping of his show, though the episode never made it to air.
  • Older Than They Think: The short-lived 1975 CBS version, with its mixture of comedy and talk, centering around a Deadpan Snarker host, is reminiscent at times of the early years of David Letterman's stint on Late Night, which didn't begin until 1982, though really Cavett and Letterman were both borrowing Steve Allen's talk show format.
  • Values Resonance: On June 24, 2020, amidst ongoing George Floyd protests, the show's Youtube channel uploaded James Baldwin's 5/16/69 appearance, where he discussed systemic racism.
