YMMV / The Day of the Triffids (1981)

Go To

  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • Wally only appears in one scene before a triffid kills him, but makes a strong impression for how Properly Paranoid he is about the monsters.
    • The blind man with a sighted daughter who talks to Bill on the first day. He provides a strong performance in his one scene, trying to keep his family from despairing, struggling to grasp the extent of the catastrophe, and pleading with Bill to stay and help his family and their neighbors.
    • The blind couple who are attacked by a triffid while the husband is scavenging in their garden with a rope tied around his waist so he can get back to the house.
  • Special Effects Failure: The anti-triffid guns that feature prominently in publicity stills but rarely on screen. The firing effect had to be done with Chroma Key, early-1980s Chroma Key at that. It looked more like a Doctor Who energy weapon effect than the Deadly Disc projectiles they were supposed to be, and the guns only got fired on-screen once.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Considering the series' low budget, the actual triffid models look pretty good, even if the occasional close-up of someone getting hit by a stinger makes it very obvious that it's a foam-rubber prop.
