- Surprisingly Improved Sequel: While The Crew and its first sequel received mixed critical reception, with their Metascores on Metacritic being in the 60s,note this entry reaches Metascores of 75 or 76, putting in into "generally favorable" territory on Metacritic. It's generally agreed that the game has better physics and a more focused feel than the first two entries.
- They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The decision to shift the setting from the contiguous United States as in the first two The Crew games to just the island of Oʻahu. Some like it for keeping things in focus while being set on a beautiful island, while others miss the sheer scale and variety of the past entries' maps (for one thing, there's no snow or sandy deserts on Oʻahu). Likewise, Ivory Tower's decision to go with a condensed, fictionalized version of the island instead of a near-1:1 scale interpretation like with the first two Test Drive Unlimited games has been met with either understanding and approval to reduce the more boring bits and keep things interesting with more things to do (which was intent of the decision) or derision for taking away much of the sense of exploration, especially since this game has aircraft as a vehicle option.
