YMMV / The Cotton Club

  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack (especially the tap dancing scene and the deleted songs added back into the recut) are appropriately catchy and stirring to capture the atmosphere of The Roaring '20s, and some fans wish there had been more music and less gangland drama in the film.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Frenchy is probably the best-liked supporting character due to his moving and humorous Villainous Friendship with his boss. It helps that Fred Gwynne plays him.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Laurence Fishburne plays Bumpy Rhodes, who was based on real-life Harlem gangster Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson, whom Fishburne would later play in Hoodlum.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: It's very hard to talk about this movie without addressing the murder of impresario Roy Radin, who was trying to help finance it, at the hands of drug dealer Karen Greenberger a.k.a. Lanie Jacobs and some of her associates. Since Greenberger's motivation was anger at being denied a producer's credit and a potential share in the profits, this led to the case being dubbed "the Cotton Club murder".
  • Retroactive Recognition: Along with Nicolas Cage in his first significant film role, Jennifer Grey has a small role as his wife in the film.
