YMMV / The Cinder Spires

Go To

  • Like You Would Really Do It: As if two thirds of the main characters were actually going to die at the end. Given this is Jim Butcher... wait until the last book or two.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Whatever Ferus actually did to the men that invaded his home. All we know is Folly refused to look, knowing that it would give her "more bad dreams"...
    • Everything Cavendish does, since she simply radiates Unintentional Uncanny Valley.
    • Sark, Cavendish's warriorborn servant, who acts unnervingly feral, and is referred to as a "monster" by Espira. It's implied that his personality and/or soul is somehow linked or similar to a silkweaver, given the way he moves and acts is very unlike a warriorborn.
    • The Mistmaw, and everything it does - a Kaiju and borderline Animalistic Abomination, under Cavendish's control, it's capable of wiping out entire Spires. Which it does, being a mile-wide monster capable of eating thousands of people alive, by grabbing them with acid soaked tentacles and reeling them into its belly where they're slowly absorbed through the skin. We don't see too much of the details, with Bridget at one point refusing to look, and Fenli, who'd compared the fleeing humans to field mice running from an overturned nest, murmurs, subdued, "the poor mice."
  • The Woobie: Folly, a young etherealist whose particular form of madness can't let her talk directly to anyone, and with the certain knowledge that it's going to get worse.
