YMMV / The Chadbourne Episode

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Canevin reveals the existence of ghouls and the death of little Truman Curtiss to one of the search parties for the child. He does so with necessary emotional distance for everyone to get through to what still needs to be done, but the thing is, the boy's own uncle, Eli Curtiss, is part of the search party. And he has no stronger reaction to the child's death than any of the others who, presumably, didn't know the child personally.
  • Values Dissonance: There is a distinct anti-immigration sentiment when it concerns people who aren't white. The Persians that come to Chadbourne are potentially all ghouls or only some are ghouls and the others smuggle them along despite the danger they pose to the poor unsuspecting white New Englanders. Whichever the case, the implication is that hospitality to people who are different is a risk not worth taking. Meanwhile, there's a line casually thrown in that "a child has always been perfectly safe in Chadbourne since they killed off the last Indian a hundred and fifty years ago." The indifference to colonial genocide and any children killed therein aside, there is a very skewed logic in, on one hand, saying that it's okay for white people to come to America and kill the local non-white population for own benefit while, on the other hand, also deriving the story's horror from non-white people coming to America to kill the local white population for own benefit.
