• Adaptation Displacement: While the original novel was also adapted into a 1965 film, both failed to receive the level of success the anime did. Most people don't even know this based on a book and both that and the movie remain in obscurity.
• Values Dissonance:
  • The Rhodes have an African servant named Hawa who performs all the menial jobs of the household.
  • The white schoolchildren in Kenya are told that their fathers were "working towards handing over the responsibilities of the country to its native people". Nowadays, people would be straight up honest that what they were doing there was colonialism.
  • Jackie's schoolteacher bemoans that her school "is shrinking in white [British] schoolchildren".
