  • Anti-Climax Boss: Two big ones, Olidan and Orrin. The former dies before Jorg has a chance to meet him again, and the latter is murdered by his brother, who becomes Jorg's opponent in his place.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Gorgoth and Gog. Katherine is also a very popular character, and Miana too.
  • Evil Is Cool: Jorg, although he's often the lesser of two evils.
  • Fridge Horror: Why did all the cultures revert, and why are there so few non-white characters from children of immigrants? They were almost all killed after the apocalypse by racists, the Church, or people looking for scapegoats.
  • Ho Yay: Jorg and Sir Makin is lampshaded by one prostitute Jorg sleeps with. Grumlow is also said to 'have a soft spot' for Young Sim and the two often spend time together, with Grumlow becoming very agitated whenever Sim is threatened.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Qalasadi is a Moorish mathmagician that uses his skills in mathematics to predict possible outcomes with near perfect accuracy. Entering the Jorg's grandfather as an advisor, he almost successfully poisoned them all while letting Jorg take the blame. Disappearing Korg would track Qalasadi down and on the way prevent the scheme of a murderous AI, which what Qalasadi wanted to happen. Always charming and polite Qalasadi achieves all his goals.
  • Moe: Gog.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Jorg's father crossed it when he made Jorg break all of his dog's legs and when he finally refused at the last one Olidan burned the dog alive in order to teach Jorg a lesson. Jorg himself merrily skips across the horizon without a care.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Gog's death. Even Jorg is saddened by it.
    Brother Gog I miss. There is no sound more annoying than the chatter of a child, and none more sad than the silence they leave when they are gone.
    • On the last few pages of Emperor of Thorns, Jorg of all people subjects us to one when he's become a data ghost, thus no longer able to touch or openly interact with his family, and tells his small son, Will, that he's only an echo of Will's real father: "I feel only an echo of the love he would have had for you. But it's a very loud echo."
