• Alternate Character Interpretation: Was Celeste lying about the fact her Nazi captor was actually her consensual lover and sabotaged the gas chamber tanks? Mal Considine believes she's telling the truth but it seems severely unlikely given the Nazis assigned there were fanatics. It also is perfect for attempting to undercut his manhood and feeling of accomplishment as her "protector."
• Moral Event Horizon: As nasty as Dudley Smith is, he has a certain level of Evil Is Cool until the revelation that he killed the victim of the Sleepy Lagoon Murder, José Gallardo Díaz, because she slept with his niece and Dudley was infuriated due to his racism. He then blamed a bunch of nearby Mexican Americans as responsible. This touched off the Zoot Suit Riots and much of the instability in Los Angeles as well as the Wolverine murders..
• Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Mal Considine is a Abusive Spouse who hospitalizes his Holocaust survivor wife, Buzz Meaks used to cover up Howard Hughes' dalliances with underage girls, and Danny Upshaw is driven to suicide. It's hard to care about any of them.
• The Woobie: Danny Upshaw is the only man who wants to actually solve the Wolverine killings due to the victims being gay men. However, his Armored Closet Gay status and terror of being outed results in him being Driven to Suicide.
