• Jerkass Woobie: Bres mac Elathan is undoubtedly a jerkass, but it's also blatantly clear that his father has absolutely no respect for him, his son dies in front of him, he loses his throne, and, in another poem, he's killed by being forced to drink bog water. Essentially the one person, in the world, who loves him is his mother.
• Values Dissonance: Bres' deep relationship with his mother is his main saving grace to modern readers, but actually one MORE sign that he's a bad candidate for kingship; in medieval Ireland, that makes him more dependent on the women of the tribe than the men.
• The Woobie: Sreng Mac Sengann watches almost everyone he loves die in a battle that he'd begged them to avoid and is left to lead the Fir Bolg through a battle that he knows they can't win. When he goes to make a final charge of the Tuatha Dé, he gives a speech that begins, "Resistance is destruction of men". He is able to get the Tuatha Dé to agree to terms that allow the Fir Bolg to keep Connacht, but, at the beginning of the Second Battle, and in the account of the Second Battle in Lebor Gabála Érenn, the Fir Bolg are mentioned as having been exiled from Ireland. The guy just can't catch a break.
