The portrayal of women in this movie was not positive to say the least. Wayne M. Bryant argued that while it was "an excellent film", it was marred by "instances of gratuitous sexism". Tom O'Regan noted that as a result of this controversy, the film gained "an ambiguous reputation."
The film has come under criticism for the portrayal of the Filipina character, Cynthia. Melba Margison of the Centre for Filipino Concerns stated that Cynthia was portrayed as "a gold-digger, a prostitute, an entertainer whose expertise is popping out ping-pong balls from her sex-organ, a manic depressive, loud and vulgar. The worst stereotype of the Filipina." The creators have defended this but it's still very clearly sexist and racist.
To make things worse, Cynthia is Filipino because she speaks Tagalog but the other characters see her as Japanese and her tape has her name written in katakana.
The use of a bigoted butch lesbian has also been panned. While she was unpleasant character, Bernadette told her off with an insult that referred to her poor attitude stemming from menstruation and not having sex with men. So gay men and trans women are misunderstood woobies but lesbians and trans men are jerks with severe issues?
Crowning Music of Awesome: The gang performs "I Will Survive" for a group of Aboriginal people, with native instruments playing in the background, complete with didgeridoo.
I Am Not Shazam: Before watching the film, lot of people mistakenly assume that Priscilla is the name of one of the characters rather than the bus.
