YMMV / The Act of Killing

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Shown by accident in glorious real time. When Anwar and his gang stage an on-camera reenactment of their murder spree with the filmmakers' help, one of the extras portraying their victims start to break down crying a little too convincingly. They start to scold him for ruining the shoot... only for him to reveal that one of his family members was indeed killed in the real purge.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Particularly the fantasy sequences, but really the film as a whole. Looking into the souls of these murderers is probably one of the most disturbing cinema experiences available.
    • Anwar dry-heaving repeatedly towards the end of the film as he realises the scale of what he has done. Doubles as Nausea Fuel.
  • Signature Scene: Either the opening scene showing the filming of the musical sequence, or the climactic scene of Anwar's Villainous Breakdown where he starts crying and dry heaving.
