This is less funny considering the sexual harassment allegations against Sherman Alexie, including inappropriate sexual talk towards his female friends, especially since Arnold is partly his AuthorAvatar.

* TheWoobie: Jesus Christ, Arnold's life sucks. Born into a poor Native American family on a reservation, his dog dies in the first chapter as a result of his parents being unable to afford medical treatment and being forced to shoot them. It doesn't get much easier from then on.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Just because the book is a diary illustrated with cartoons and filled with humor does not mean it's another Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Not only does it deal with the serious issue of an impaired Native American attending an all-white school off his reservation, it has strong profanity, references to sexual acts, alcoholism as a main theme, and plenty of violence and death. Unfortunately, because of this, the book has been banned in multiple areas due to MoralGuardians viewing it as such.
