• Complete Monster: Evil Sorcerer Chi'gandir is a criminal who specializes in transforming people horribly against their will. He used to extort them so they'd bribe him for reversing the spells. In the past, he maimed a boatman named Weylan's face, who dared to resist his gang. Years later, on running into him again, Weylan pleads that he undo it. Chi'gandir does... but also shrinks Weylan's body at the same time. Just for fun, apparently. He's just a vicious sadist with no redeeming qualities at all, while most other villains are more nuanced.
• Magnificent Bastard: Morai is a bold, charming bandit leader who has evaded Nolan for years and garnered a following as a folk hero for his exploits, to Nolan's great frustration. He manipulates his gang members into going after Nolan, while pocketing the loot after each gets killed by doing so. When he's finally confronted by Nolan, it seems like he's about to face him in a duel. Instead, he traps Nolan in a pit, escaping while he's down there. Nolan can't help but like him in spite of all this. After he's helped by Morai to stop far worse people, Nolan and he ride off to have adventures together.
• Squick:
  • The book describes in grotesque detail how Weylan was subject to a horrific unwilling magical transformation by Evil Sorcerer Chi'gandir, shrunken into child size.
  • It's also quite grisly as Nolan beats Tafano to a pulp for making him kill Tafano's warhorse, which he had attack after their battle was already lost.
• Tearjerker: What happened to Nolan's little brother. He was murdered not just for the reason the rest were, but due to him being disabled, which his killer deems an abomination. It describes him as (being just a little boy) not understanding what's happening and thinking it's a game at first, then realizing it's not while trying to reach his mother before his killer rides him down.
