• Harsher in Hindsight: The end of the episode mentions tornadoes appearing around Carthage after Death is released. In Real Life, less than 2 years later, a historically destructive tornado would hit the nearby town of Joplin.
• Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: The once-hated Jo became beloved by many fans thanks to her two appearances this season, leading to an intense Alas, Poor Scrappy reaction to her death.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
  • Ellen was never as hated as Jo, and as evidenced by the positive reaction to her brief return in Season 6, there was plenty of places to take the character as a surrogate mother figure to the boys and Love Interest for Bobby.
  • Jo had already become more likable by the end of "Born Under a Bad Sign" and in Season 5, many fans embraced her only to see her killed off like so many other female characters on the show. Her scenes with Dean in "Defending Your Life" were heartbreaking.
