YMMV / Superman: True Brit

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The style of comedy was extremely British (it was co-written by John Cleese, after all), with a strong Black Comedy bent that doesn't really appeal to mainstream American comic-book fans, while British fans criticized the book for using extremely dated humor and references (for instance, a cameo by The Rutles, a band that was already dated back when they debuted in 1979, and recycling a gag from the "Bicycle Repairman" sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus.)
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Superman being raised as a Brit becomes this, what with him being played by the British actor Henry Cavill in the DC Extended Universe.
    • The premise also becomes this with regards to Superman & Lois where it's revealed one of the villains is another survivor of Krypton's destruction whose pod landed in England.
  • Uncertain Audience: It's a humorous take on America's most recognizable superhero... co-written by a British comedian whose heyday was in the seventies. Mainstream American fans aren't likely to grasp the book's style of comedy, while British fans found a lot of the jokes dated.
