The comic book

The film adaptation

  • Critical Dissonance: Critics liked it, deeming it a competent comedy film with some great special effects (which earned it a Goya Award on this field), but casual viewers were less thrilled, especially due to Rovira's casting and performance, and fans of the comics in particular found it a rather mediocre adaptation. It was still a box office success, though.
  • Questionable Casting: The casting of polarizing comedian Dani Rovira as the title character was equally divisive.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Many reviews noted that, while entertaining as a comedy, the film just didn't try very hard to be a good adaptation of Superlópez, giving rather the impression that the filmmakers couldn't see beyond the most superficial aspects of the comics. The most cited complaint was that the entire film is more or less a parody of Man of Steel despite the fact that the comics have never really hinged on their Superman references (those amount to Superlópez's character premise and just that), but they also lamented the absence of most secondary characters, the insertion of a Love Triangle that wasn't in the comics, and the usage of a generic kind of humor instead of the original's costumbrismo.
