  • Fair for Its Day: While the exaggerated character designs and overblown stereotypes are completely unacceptable these days —heck, even by The '60s, which is why United Artists withdrew it from circulation in 1968 — black people are still depicted in a positive light. They are shown to be good church-going people who have a warm connected community full of love. Though the short does focus on the only character with negative stereotypes, he's clearly an aberration and is portrayed as such, and his punishment in the story makes him become a better person. It might look offensive nowadays (due to the minstrel art-style), but at the time it was seen as very respectful to the black community and its culture.
