YMMV / Stuber

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The movie leans really hard into Stu and Vic's Sensitive Guy and Manly Man dynamic to communicate the idea there is no perfect ideal of masculinity; Stu has to learn to stop being passive about his feelings while Vic learns it's okay to become more emotional and empathetic.
  • Awesome Music: While the veterinarian is walking the dogs, he plugs in "The Air That I Breathe" by The Hollies, which continues over the shootout in his clinic.
  • Cliché Storm: Many of the disappointed reviews boil this movie down to talented performers going through popcorn flick cliches dating back to at least The '80s.
  • Critical Dissonance: The critics seem to hate this movie a lot more than its ordinary viewers do, to the extent that it has a Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score of 43%, and a Verified Audience Score of 79%.note
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Two Saturdays after the premiere of a movie featuring Kumail Nanjiani and two Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) actors, Marvel Studios confirmed a rumor that Nanjiani would also join the MCU, portraying Kingo in Eternals.
  • It's Not Supposed to Win Oscars: When Bautista shared a link to Angry Joe's glowing review, he also called it unfair that the critics would hold a movie intended for "pure fun" to the same standards as "an art house film".
  • One-Scene Wonder: The male stripper played by Steve Howey that gives Stu relationship advice is one of the funniest parts of the movie.
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • If you ever wanted a Deadpool (2016) spin-off film about Dopinder, then this is your best bet.
    • Despite being a buddy comedy instead of a drama, Stuber feels much like a New '10s Setting Update of Collateral: it's a Los Angeles-based crime story where a gun-toting badass forces a meek driver to ferry them around the city in pursuit of their aims, focusing largely on the relationship between driver and passenger.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Stu and Vic have very strong chemistry, yet several reviews lament that the movie didn't take fullest advantage of Nanjiani's and Bautista's comedic talents.
