YMMV / Still Alice

Go To

  • Consolation Award: Julianne Moore's win for Still Alice in 2014 was seen in large part a consolation for not having won for Far from Heaven (which she lost to Nicole Kidman for The Hours) or Boogie Nights (which she lost to Kim Basinger for L.A. Confidential).
    • Doubles as an Award Snub, given that Moore beat out Rosmund Pike in Gone Girl for the spot (who gave an extremely beloved performance, albeit one that wasn't Oscar Bait).
  • Heartwarming Moments: The ending, where Lydia reads a passage from Angels in America to Alice, who by now can barely speak but manages to communicate her understanding.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Alice's quickly progressing mental deterioration due to her disease. And the worst part? The film ends just as Alice's dementia is going into its most severe stage, leaving the viewer to imagine her eventual regression and death.
  • Tear Jerker: Alice's entire progression through Alzheimer's is bleak to bear witness to, but her initial breakdown when she first relays the news of her potential diagnosis to John is especially sad.
