YMMV / Stellaluna

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The owl in the movie is built up as a great threat that all the jungle fears, and yet is defeated rather easily in the end.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The film gives us "My Whole World's Turned Upside Down". Even the generally negative reviews of the film on IMDB usually single out this song as one of the film's few saving graces.
    • "Bring Out the Best in You" is also pretty catchy.
  • Moe: Stellaluna is already a very cute fruit bat in the original book. But the Living Books adaptation and especially the 2004 film amps up her sweetness. While the film gained mixed/negative reception, fans and viewers will admit that Stellaluna is downright adorable. Helps that she's voiced by Chiara Zanni in the movie.
  • Narm: The owl in the movie is supposed to be seen as intimidating, and the film certainly treats him as such, with the other characters being frightened by him, and intense music playing every time he appears onscreen. Despite this, neither his design nor voice are threatening in the slightest.
  • Tear Jerker: The musical number "My Whole World's Turned Upside Down" shows Stellaluna sadly singing about how out of place she feels among her bird family. At one point, she is seen with a tear in her eye as she watches Mother Bird sleeping with Pip, Flitter, and Flap.
  • The Scrappy: Most viewers see Askari, the self-titled superhero jumping spider as this, with many thinking he contributes little to the story and doesn't fit the tone of the original book.
  • The Woobie: Stellaluna. She's separated from her mother without knowing if her mother even survived, left alone in a forest at night, and has to deal with feeling like an outcast due to being raised by birds.
