- Tear Jerker: Standing outside in the rain while your daughter gets married inside is pretty goddamn depressing.
- Values Dissonance: Detached from the extremely strict social hierarchies of the time and the restrictive class dynamics, it's extremely hard to watch the ending as either happy or fulfilling (as a very loving mother gives up everything - including her hope of a relationship with her daughter - just so her daughter can enjoy marryinng in with "the right people", aka the rich people.)
