YMMV / Star Trek: The Next Generation S4E3 "Brothers"

  • Fridge Horror: Considering that Data is an automaton here with no conscious control whatsoever when he seizes the ship, his trial in "The Measure of a Man" could very likely have ended quite differently had the events here occurred first. Certainly Riker would have had to make these events the centerpiece of his argument.
  • Memetic Mutation: Data's insanely complicated code to lock out the computer has become popular online, especially for computer security specialists, as an over-the-top "Now that's a secure password!" example.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Within minutes, Data tricks the crew into giving him command of the bridge, then imitates Picard's voice to gain full access to the ship's computer and reroutes all controls of the ship to his console. Even when the crew eventually force Data to leave the bridge, he locks all computer access behind an impossible-for-humans-to-remember numerical code and sets up a pre-emptive series of force fields in the ship's corridors that allow him to walk safely to his destination with security teams unable to lay a hand on him. It's a chilling reminder of how dangerous Data could be if he ever malfunctioned or turned evil — he could take control of the ship and kill the entire crew with a few keystrokes, and they wouldn't be able to stop him. Probably the only reason Lore didn't during his first appearance was because he didn't understand the ship as well as Data did, and was trying to serve the crew up to the Crystalline Entity; think of what might have happened if he basically decided "Screw it, Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies".
  • Special Effects Failure: When Data activates the force field in the Jeffries tube, the effects team forgot to add the force field effect. All we see is a flash of light from off-screen.
